Sonia Upton, Ph.D.
Consortium Policy Administrator
Dr. Sonia Upton works with State Education Agencies (SEAs) to identify policy and implementation needs and acts as their advocate. She manages the development and dissemination of Consortium-wide communications including annual reports, bulletins, and consortium policy proceedings. She also manages the recruitment of State and Local Education Agencies to participate in test development, research projects, and national partnerships. Additionally, she acts as the liaison between WIDA departments and Consortium member states.
Sonia came to WIDA from the Kentucky Department of Education where she worked as a Title III-LEP/Immigrant Program Consultant. Her experience in education includes 18 years in the classroom teaching ELLs and working at the Kentucky Department of Education as a Title III-LEP/Immigrant Program Consultant. Sonia holds a B.S. degree in Elementary Education, a Masters in Early Childhood Education and English as a Second Language, and a Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership and Administration.
Sonia's background includes presenting at various state, regional, and national conferences and writing several articles and publications about English language learners.
