Susana Ibarra Johnson
Senior Professional Development Consultant
Susana Ibarra Johnson, a former Bilingual Education elementary school teacher, is now specializing in Spanish literacy and second language acquisition methodology as a WIDA Consultant. She conducts many WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards trainings and is currently coordinating the WIDA Spanish Language Development Standards (SALSA grant) project in order to develop a pedagogical resource guide for bilingual, dual language immersion, and heritage language programs.
The third daughter of a family of eight migrant workers, her understanding and devotion reaches beyond her academic training to her own experience of learning English as a second language. For the past several years, she has been facilitating teacher trainings in the implementation of dual language immersion programs, developing critical literacy and second language acquisition at the elementary level. Her specialty is in working very closely with individual teachers for the purpose of analyzing how they can better maximize the development of literacy and language for the English language learners.
Susana holds a M.S. in Bilingual Education from Texas A&M-Kingsville University and a B.S. from the University of Texas in San Antonio. She is currently a doctoral candidate at the University of New Mexico and has worked extensively on a number of research projects within the Albuquerque Public Schools. She serves on the Dual Language of New Mexico board and aids in the organization of La Cosecha conference.
