Dr. Ngoc-Diep Thi Nguyen


Dr. Ngoc-Diep Thi Nguyen is currently the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction in Evanston Township High School District 202 in Evanston, Illinois. From 2006 to 2010, she was the Assistant Superintendent of Instructional Services in Des Plaines School District 62. In both capacities, she is responsible for assessment, curriculum development, instructional improvement and professional development to ensure quality instruction for students of linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds.

Prior to coming to Des Plaines School District 62, Diep served from 1994 to 2006 as the Director for Bilingual/Multicultural Programs in Schaumburg School District 54 where she implemented Transitional Bilingual Education, Dual Language and Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools programs. In this capacity, she works to improve the quality of education for all students, especially English language Learners (ELLs). Dr. Nguyen was a Senior Consultant for the Illinois Resource Center (IRC) from 1988-1994, where she provided professional development workshops and consultative assistance to school districts in Illinois and elsewhere.

Dr. Nguyen received her Ph.D. from the Ohio State University in Educational Studies in 1989. She has an M.A. in French Literature and a B.S. in Foreign Language Education. She has conducted ethnographic studies on the role of bilingual instructional aides, the perceptions of literacy of bilingual/ESL teachers and community’s perceptions of the schooling needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students. While in School District 54, she also conducted a longitudinal study on the language and academic growth of Dual Language students. Diep is proficient in Vietnamese, English, French and Spanish.

Diep currently serves on the Illinois Bilingual Advisory Council to the Illinois State Superintendent. She is the co-author, with Dr. Margo Gottlieb, of the book “Assessment and Accountability in Language Education Programs” (Caslon, 2007).
