WIDA Standards in International Contexts
The WIDA Standards Framework was developed to meet the needs of educators serving English learners in WIDA Consortium states throughout the United States. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in WIDA's standards and assessments from educators outside the U.S. in schools that have adopted American educational models and curricula and that deliver content instruction in English. In response, we have expanded our work into international contexts. Our aim is to provide educators in these international schools with tools for designing instruction and using assessments to support their students as they acquire the academic language necessary for achievement in English.
Determining the fit between WIDA standards and global contexts
We recognize that international schools are situated in contexts that may differ from the U.S. in several ways. For this reason, we invited educators in international contexts to review the standards to determine the fit between the WIDA English language development (ELD) standards and education programs in schools outside the U.S. Teachers analyzed the standards and the components of the Standards Framework at each grade level and across all content areas in light of their own teaching contexts. They provided feedback about the cultural appropriateness of the tasks and activities; the grade-level relevance of example topics, contexts, and topic-related language; and the utility of each component of the Standards Framework. Based on the results of our survey, we are currently developing an International Edition of the 2012 Amplification of the English Language Development Standards. In this volume, we highlight areas that teachers in international contexts suggested should be examined carefully to ensure that the standards framework is useful to schools in differing contexts and regions of the world. This edition will soon be available in the section with other WIDA downloads and products.
