Cultivating Practices to Support Language Learner Success: A Facilitator Kit

Purpose:

This Facilitation Kit is designed to support facilitators in leading a committed group of educators through 16 one–hour sessions on "Cultivating Practices to Support Language Learner Success." The sessions are designed to support educators in using instructional practices that advance English language development and academic achievement through WIDA's English Language Development Standards and Can Do Philosophy.

Target Audience:

Teacher leaders, principals, facilitators, coaches in K–12 educational systems that provide professional development and work collaboratively with educators to improve the academic performance and language development of English language learners (ELLs). Facilitators need to be able to provide 2 one–hour sessions monthly for a total of 8 months.

Format:

  1. All Facilitation Kit materials will be housed on a secure login site that can be accessed by facilitators with a login.
  2. Facilitators will join one live 2 hour webinar per month for each content topic. There will be a total of 8 months. The webinars will be led by a WIDA facilitator and may be staggered throughout the day to accommodate time zones and schedules.
  3. Facilitators will introduce each content topic in a one–hour session through readings, video clips, guided discussions and/or classroom application. The second one–hour session is intended for participants to debrief and extend discussions on how the learning from the prior session was applied in the school/classroom setting (e.g., session 1 & 1A).

The Facilitation Kit includes:

  • Facilitator Guide which includes a detailed script and annotated handouts
  • Participant Guide which includes supporting documents and handouts
  • PowerPoint Slides for 16 one hour sessions for professional learning

  2. Building an Asset–Oriented School/Classroom Culture
  3. Leveraging Students' Assets
  4. Understanding Students' Academic Language Development
  5. Understanding Key Uses of Academic Language
  6. Using Language Supports that Integrate Language & Content
  7. Supporting Students' Academic Language & Literacy Development
  8. Scaffolding Complex Texts
  9. Reflection & Next Steps

Requirements:

  • Participants need to be able to allocate 6 hours a month for implementation:
    • 2 hours to attend WIDA webinar
    • 2 hours to prep professional learning
    • 2 hours to facilitate professional learning in their school or district (2, 1–hour sessions each month)
