Institute for Innovative Assessment

The Department has developed and investigated a set of research-based instructional and professional development materials designed to support teachers - both of ELs and mainstream content-area teachers - in differentially instructing and assessing English learners on subject-matter academic content in the classroom. Developing and administering formal and informal classroom assessments that provide accurate information about ELs’ content knowledge is a critical skill, yet many teachers have gaps in their preparation and knowledge of how to create effective classroom assessments, particularly for English learners with lower levels of proficiency. The materials and research available at the right offer guidance and strategies to be implemented in the classroom, along with free sample tasks and testlets.
