Will the online or paper ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test be administered in Virginia?

During the Pre-ID data upload window (October 9 through November 17, 2017), school divisions will specify whether the online and/or paper ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 tests will be administered in spring 2018. Divisions may select one of the following options for English learners (ELs) in grades 1 through 12:

  • All ELs will be assessed with the online ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test (with an option for any student to respond in an ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Writing Response Booklet);
  • All ELs will be assessed with the paper ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test; or
  • Some ELs will be assessed with the online ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test and some ELs will be assessed with the paper ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test.

The Kindergarten ACCESS for ELLs and Alternate ACCESS for ELLs will continue as a paper-based test.

Will 4th and 5th grade ELs on the Writing test respond by handwriting or keyboarding?

For the grade cluster 4-5, keyboarding online is the default response mode to the online Writing tasks. However, ELs in the grade-level cluster 4-5, as well as grade-level clusters 6-8 and 9-12, may respond to the online Writing tasks in ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 Writing Response Booklets.

What type of training is available for ACCESS for ELLs 2.0?

Training for the ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 test will no longer have Checklists; rather, Certification for the following will be required:

  • Alternate ACCESS for ELLs
  • Kindergarten ACCESS for ELLs (which includes a quiz for the Speaking test)
  • Online ACCESS for ELLs 2.0
  • Paper ACCESS for ELLs 2.0 (which includes a quiz for the Speaking test for grades 1-5 and grades 6-12)

Professional development activities are announced in Superintendent’s Memoranda.
