To provide timely, meaningful, and actionable research that promotes educational equity and academic achievement for linguistically and culturally diverse students.


Research team members work closely with researchers from the Wisconsin Center for Education Research (WCER), and draw support and information from member states, WIDA leadership, staff, and research organizations to accomplish the team mission.

The WIDA State Dashboard is the latest component within the framework of the WIDA Data Warehouse. It is used by WIDA researchers, staff members, and WIDA Consortium member state educational agencies to view aggregated analytical information

Research Areas

Academic Language and Literacy

To support multilingual students? participation in school, community, and society as informed and engaged members, WIDA researchers study the ways students need to use language for active and deep engagement in their learning, develop related approaches and resources for students and teachers, examine changes in teaching and learning that occur when such resources are used, and collaborate with the WIDA Professional Learning team to develop high quality professional development opportunities for teachers.


The WIDA Standards Framework supports high quality instruction for multilingual students. This line of research investigates interaction among resources related to the WIDA English Language Development Standards, classroom instruction, and student learning.


The Psychometric Team monitors the quality and implementation of the psychometric properties of WIDA ACCESS for ELLs 2.0, WIDA Screener, and Alternate ACCESS assessments. The team manages and sets the agenda for the WIDA Technical Advisory Committee, consults with the Center for Applied Linguistics, and the Data Recognition Corporation on psychometric issues, and serves as content experts on the Assessment Psychometric Subcommittee. The Psychometric Team also supports states in directing validation work, technical assistance, and documentation to support the use of WIDA assessments.


This research provides policy guidance that can inform decision-making for policymakers at the district and state levels as it relates to English language learners and English language learner programs.

Professional Learning

WIDA conducts research on professional learning in an effort to connect theory and practice. This research investigates professional development opportunities that the Consortium provides to educators in its member states. The findings of the research in turn inform WIDA's professional development offerings.

Research Services

Technical Assistance

WIDA offers technical assistance services to our member states related to federal guidance of the Every Student Succeeds Act. We conduct quantitative analyses to support the assessment and accountability decisions states need to make to comply with state and federal policies.

WIDA technical assistance is not limited to quantitative analysis. To meet the needs of our member states, we also provide technical assistance incorporating qualitative methodologies, i.e., case studies, classroom observations, interviews, and survey design.
